J. Hurst Classical Art Collection

“I create for
beauty and pleasure.
I want my art
to become a part of life — enriching, ennobling,
and becoming
a majestic presence.”

Ralph Hurst 1918 - 2003

The J Hurst Art Collection represented on this website is available and is being offered for sale here for the first time. Spanning a fifty-plus year career as a renowned artist, Ralph Hurst was known as a direct carver of stone. Like Michelangelo, he did not begin carving with a preconceived idea. Rather, he let the stone dictate what it wanted to become. Some have called Hurst a “poet in stone.” All original artwork, Hurst's  sculptures and bas reliefs have both a visual and a tactile beauty. His work seduces you to touch it. Besides his work in stone, he also worked in a variety of media, earning the reputation as a multimedia artist. The collection being offered represents some of Hurst's most celebrated works including not only one and two-dimensional sculptures, but some of his paintings in watercolor and acrylic.

Though he maintained his atelier in Tallahassee, Florida, Hurst's works have been exhibited in many galleries from Maine to California and appear in many private, public and corporate collections, both in the States and abroad. A style that is unique, Hurst was a master of shape and form, combining the classical with the modern.

Take a look at the original artworks here and contact the J Hurst Art Gallery in St. Simons Island, Georgia, for more information.
